Al-Qaida in Yemeni jail break

A group of 23 convicted al-Qaida members have escaped from a prison in Yemen's capital.

The escape on Friday, came a day before the trial Mohammed Hamdi al-Ahdal of,  an al-Qaida suspect, and 14 others charged with involvement in operations in Yemen, particularly the 2000 attack on the USS Cole.

Al-Ahdal is suspected of masterminding the Cole bombing, which killed 17 US sailors, and the 2002 bombing of a   French oil tanker off Yemen's coast, which killed a Bulgarian crew member and spilled 90,000 barrels of oil into the Gulf of Aden.

Al-Ahdal, believed to be the No. 2 Al-Qaeda man in Yemen after Sinan Al-Harithy who was killed in a U.S. drone attack in eastern Yemen in 2002, said he distributed the money to the families of Al-Qaeda prisoners and detainees in Guantanamo.

Danish Embassy in Indonesia stormed

JAKARTA, Indonesia More than 150 hardline Muslims stormed into a high-rise building housing the Danish Embassy on Friday to protest the publication of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad, then tore down and burned the country's white and red flag.

The rowdy protest was one of the first in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, against the 12 cartoons that first appeared in a Danish newspaper in September. They were reprinted in several other European newspapers this week in a gesture of press freedom.

"We are not terrorists, we are not anarchists, but we are against those people who blaspheme Islam," one of the protesters shouted outside the building, which also houses several other foreign missions

al jazeera

Aljazeera has aired a new video in which al-Qaida's deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahiri calls George Bush a butcher and threatens a new attack in the US.

Monday's video was his first appearance since a US air strike that targeted him on 13 January in Pakistan. Al-Zawahiri said he had survived the raid which he said killed "innocents".

The air strike hit a building in the eastern Pakistan village of Damadola, reportedly killing four al-Qaida leaders. Thirteen villagers were also killed in the strike, angering many Pakistanis. The video appeared to be recorded this month, as it mentioned a call for a truce issued by Bin Laden in an audio tape Aljazeera said was recorded in January.

"US airplanes ... launched a raid on a village in near Peshawar after Eid al-Adha in which 18 Muslim men, women and children were killed in what they call the war against terror,"

"They said this was intended to kill myself and four brothers but now the whole world has discovered their lies ...".

"My second message is to the American people, who are drowning in illusions. I tell you that Bush and his gang are shedding your blood and wasting your money in frustrated adventures,"

"The lion of Islam, Shaikh Osama bin Laden, may God protect him, offered you a decent exit from your dilemma. But your leaders, who are keen to accumulate wealth, insist on throwing you in battles and killing your souls in Iraq and Afghanistan and - God willing - on your own land."

"Butcher of Washington, you are not only defeated and a liar, but also a failure. You are a curse on your own nation and you have brought and will bring them only catastrophes and tragedies," he said, referring to Bush. "Bush, do you know where I am? I am among the Muslim masses."

Scandinavians threatened over cartoons of Prophet

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - Denmark warned its citizens on Monday to avoid Saudi Arabia, and gunmen in Gaza said any Scandinavians there risked attack, as Muslim fury mounted over newspaper cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad.

An Iraqi militant group called on Monday for attacks on Danish and Norwegian targets, saying a boycott was not enough, according to a statement attributed to the Mujahideen Army.  The Internet statement called on fighters to "hit whatever targets possible belonging to these two countries and others that follow their steps." It could not be authenticated.

SAUDI ARABIA:  Consumers boycott Danish goods

In response to a series of cartoons depicting the prophet Mohammed that appeared in the Danish newspaper Morgenavisen Jyllands-Posten, the Saudi media has reported calls for consumers to boycott Danish products

A notice prepared by the ministries of Justice, Foreign Affairs and Integration read that neither Denmark nor the newspaper publishing these cartoons "did anything to be ashamed of."

Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen considered the caricatures once again in the frame of freedom of _expression and said the government is proud of the works made on human rights issues.

German hostages plead for help

Two German hostages held in Iraq have appealed to their government to help secure their release, in a video aired by Aljazeera.

The tape was dated 24 January, the day they were abducted in the northern industrial city of Beiji, about 240km north of Baghdad.

The hostages, identified by relatives as Thomas Nitzschke and Rene Braeunlich, arrived in Iraq on 22 January. The German Foreign Ministry said the two only planned to remain in Iraq "for a short time".

Merkel said all of Germany had been "deeply moved by the images" and vowed the government "will do everything it can to bring our fellow countrymen home safely, unharmed and healthy."

Germany's foreign intelligence service, the BND, was analysing the footage, though a spokesman declined to comment on any conclusions BND analysts might have reached.

Iraqi security forces have set up checkpoints, circulated descriptions of the two engineers and made contact with local tribal leaders to help identify the kidnappers, a spokesman for the U.S.-Iraqi Joint Coordination Centre in Tikrit, Iraq said.

Al Jazeera said the tape was received from a group that calls itself the Brigade of Ansar al-Tawhid Wa-Sunna. The group did not make any demands through the recording.

The two engineers -- identified in German media reports as Rene Braeunlich and Thomas Nitzschke -- were abducted on Tuesday outside their workplace in the Iraqi industrial town of Baiji, 180 km (110 miles) north of Baghdad.

German engineers seized in Iraq

Armed men have kidnapped two German engineers in the Iraqi industrial town of Baiji, according to Iraqi police.

Lieutenant-Colonel Kadhim Abbas and the region's deputy governor said the two men worked at a detergent plant inside an industrial complex surrounding Baiji's oil refinery, the biggest in Iraq.  At least six armed men, in two unmarked cars, grabbed the two German engineers, Abbas said.

The first German kidnapped in Iraq was Susanne Osthoff, an aid worker and archaeologist who disappeared with her Iraqi driver in northern Iraq on Nov. 25. Her release was announced Dec. 18.Part of the ransom money alleged to have been paid by the German government to win the freedom of Iraq hostage Susanne Osthoff last month was found on Osthoff after her release, the German magazine Focus said on Saturday.

Without citing its sources, Focus said officials at the German embassy in Baghdad had found several thousand U.S. dollars in the 43-year-old German archaeologist's clothes when she took a shower at the embassy shortly after being freed.

The serial numbers on the bills matched those used by the government to pay off Osthoff's kidnappers.

They were working for a German company which has a commercial relationship with an Iraqi government-owned detergent company.  In Berlin, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the German Foreign Minister, said on Friday that contact had been established with the kidnappers

Al Qaida explosives expert and poisons trainer killed

Date of birth:  April 29, 1953
Place of birth:  Egypt
Sex:  Male
Aliases:  Abu Khabab al-Masri

Midhat Mursi al-Sayid 'Umar AKA Abu Khabab al-Masri, was  an explosives expert and poisons trainer working on behalf of al Qaeda.

He operated a terrorist training camp at Derunta, Afghanistan where he provided hundreds of mujahidin with hands on poisons and explosives training. Since 1999, he has proliferated training manuals that contain recipes for crude chemical and biological weapons. Some of these training manuals were recovered by U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

ABC News has learned that al Qaeda's master bomb maker and chemical weapons expert was one of the men killed in last week's U.S. missile attack in eastern Pakistan.

Midhat Mursi, 52, also known as Abu Khabab al-Masri, was identified by Pakistani authorities as one of three known al Qaeda leaders present at an apparent terror summit conference in the village of Damadola.

US helicopter down in Iraq - VIDEO

Download   video   / RM/

"BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Islamic militants released an Internet video of what they said was a missile shooting down a U.S. helicopter near Baghdad on Monday, killing the two crew in the second downing of an aircraft in three days

Footage widely broadcast on Arab television of a guided surface-to-air missile slamming into the aircraft came after warnings from U.S. commanders that rebels could escalate attacks this week as results of last month's election are confirmed.

The Electoral Commission said it had upheld only a few complaints about the December 15 ballot and that final results, to be announced on Friday, would differ little from an early count that prompted charges of vote-rigging from minority Sunni Arabs.

The U.S. military said both crew were killed when their Apache attack helicopter came down in swampland near Taji, north of Baghdad. It said the cause was unclear but the area was known for insurgent activity. A year ago, a British C-130 troop carrier came down nearby, apparently hit by a missile.

Local witnesses said the aircraft crashed after coming under missile fire near the village of Mishahda, close to Taji. The video showed the firing of what appeared to be a Soviet SAM-7 portable missile. A second insurgent group claimed to have shot down an Apache helicopter, a two-seater assault aircraft."

4 years

A detainee at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp, who the US claims was a bodyguard of Osama Bin Laden, is refusing to cooperate with a military tribunal. US President George W Bush says that as commander-in-chief of his country in times of war, he has the right to allow military tribunals to decide the guilt or innocence of terror suspects who are out to attack the United States. But the holding of military tribunals at the camp is still causing controversy around the world.

It's four years this week since the first detainee was brought to the prison camp in Guantanamo Bay, a US Marine base in Cuba. Because months and sometimes years passed without prisoners being charged or convicted of anything, Washington began the process of setting up military tribunals

Nigerian security forces are attempting to negotiate the release of four Shell employees abducted in the south of the country on Wednesday. The four employees of the Anglo-Dutch oil company were on a boat in an offshore oilfield when they were seized by about 40 armed men in canoes. The hostages are an American, a Britain, a Bulgarian and a Honduran national. The kidnappers are demanding the release of two ethnic leaders.

Shell has resumed production at the oilfield where the kidnapping took place.
However, it will still take another three or four days to restore production at the Trans-Ramos oil pipeline in the Niger Delta, which was damaged in an explosion on Wednesday. The explosion led to the loss of more than 100,000 barrels of crude oil per day

French hostage released in Iraq

A French engineer taken hostage in Iraq last month has been freed by his captors, who appear to have panicked at a checkpoint and bundled him out of their car, Iraqi Interior Ministry and police sources said on Sunday.

France confirmed the release of Bernard Planche, who was seized in early December in Baghdad where he had been working for a non-governmental organization at a water treatment plant.

The Iraqi sources said it appeared Planche's captors were trying to move him from one area to another on Saturday when they encountered a joint U.S. and Iraqi army checkpoint near Abu Ghraib prison, west of the capital.           They pushed the Frenchman out of their car and escaped.

Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri new video “Islamic Victory in Iraq,”

Ayman al Zawahiri

A new videotape featuring Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri, al-Qaeda’s number two, was aired today, January 6, 2006, by the Arabic satellite channel, al-Jazeera. :

In a videotape, excerpts of which were aired by Aljazeera on Friday, Ayman al-Zawahiri was apparently referring to recent comments by Donald Rumsfeld, the US defence secretary, who on 22 December hinted that the US military will soon begin reducing its troop strength in Iraq below 138,000.

"I congratulate my nation and bless Islam's victory in Iraq," he said.

"Oh my Muslim brothers, I told you more than a year ago that the pullout of America's troops from Iraq would be a matter of time and Americans are now begging to leave and negotiate with the mujahidin.

"Bush, the liar, was forced to announce in November 2005 that he would withdraw his troops from Iraq.

"Since Bush is addicted to lying, he justified his withdrawal by saying that Iraqi forces have become well-trained. But he did not set a timetable for the pullout.

Al-Zawahiri asked: "If your forces with all its aircraft, missiles, tanks and fleets are moaning, bleeding and looking for an escape from Iraq, then will the hypocrites, conspirators, infidels [the Iraqi government] resist what the 'greatest power in the world' has failed to resist?

"The timetable of withdrawal was set a long time ago and you [Bush] have to confess that you have been defeated in Iraq as you have been defeated in Afghanistan and will be shortly defeated in Palestine if Allah's willing."  Al-Qaida's deputy leader says recent hints by American officials of a troop reduction in Iraq are a victory for Islam.

Suicide bomb victims, families sue NatWest in US

LONDON (Reuters) - Suicide bombing victims and their families have filed a U.S. lawsuit seeking damages from Royal Bank of Scotland's NatWest unit, accusing it of knowingly providing services to a charity they say is linked to Palestinian Islamic militant group Hamas.

Royal Bank of Scotland and UK charity Interpal rejected the lawsuit's accusations.

An amended lawsuit filed on Thursday in the U.S. Federal Court for the Eastern District of New York said services provided by NatWest for Interpal violated U.S. criminal and civil laws.

Plaintiffs in the case include relatives of victims of a suicide bomber on a bus in Jerusalem on August 19, 2003. Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack, which killed 20 people.

The plaintiffs said that, by providing a full range of banking services, NatWest enabled Interpal to raise funds on its Web site.

Interpal was named as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist in August 2003 by U.S. authorities, who alleged that it supported Hamas's activities.

"NatWest is aware of a lawsuit commenced against it related to Interpal, a UK-based charity. The claims asserted against NatWest are without merit," a Royal Bank of Scotland spokeswoman said.

"It is worth noting that the UK Charity Commission has investigated allegations of Interpal connections with terrorist organization Hamas on two occasions, once in 1996 and once in 2003, and has twice found no evidence of wrong-doing on the part of Interpal."

The Charity Commission, which regulates UK charities, froze Interpal's accounts in August 2003 but unfroze them a month later, citing the absence of any clear evidence showing Interpal had links to Hamas's political or violent militant activities.

Interpal describes itself on its Web site as "a non-political, non-profit making British charity that focuses solely on the provision of relief and development aid to the poor and needy of Palestine the world over, primarily in Palestine and the refugee camps in Jordan and Lebanon."

Cameron Doley at Interpal's lawyers Carter-Ruck said: "Interpal is an entirely lawful charity operating in this country under the scrutiny of the Charity Commission."

The lawsuit alleges that Interpal channeled money for Hamas, which is listed by the United States and the European Union as a terrorist organization.

"When it passed the Anti-Terrorism Act, congress recognized the threat posed by terrorism financing and it enacted legislation to prevent exactly this kind of alleged conduct," said Gary Osen, one of the lead counsel for the families filing the law suit

HAMAS fronts appeal for donations to be sent to local bank accounts.

These include:

- the London-based 'Interpal' dollar, euro and sterling accounts listed as at the National Westminster Bank;

- the Paris-based 'Comite de bienfaisance et de secours aux Palestiniens' (CBSP), requests donations be sent to an account at a Nancy branch of 'La Poste';

- the Malmo-based Swedish 'Al-Aqsa Spannmal Stiftelse' gives an account at BankGiro;

- the Vienna-based 'Palestinensiche Verein in Osterreich', whose account is given as at the Austria Creditanstaltbank;

- the Genoa-based 'Associazione Benefica di Solidarieta con il Popolo Palestinese', with an account address at the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro.

Transfer of funds:

i) From EUROPE -- Funds are transferred from Europe through two secondary foundations which are responsible for raising funds:
a) AL-AQSA Foundation in Germany, which raises funds in the Netherlands and Belgium;

HOAX source :

January 5, 2006 -- Polish government responds to WMR report on Polish assurances of diplomatic support within NATO for a U.S. attack on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Radio Polonia is reporting today on WMR's January 2, 06 report that on a recent visit to Washington, Poland's new right wing defense and foreign ministers assured their American counterparts of Poland's support within NATO in the event of a U.S. strike on Iranian nuclear sites. The Radio Polonia report states, "The spokesman for the Polish Foreign Affairs Ministry has dismissed claims that Poland has pledged its support in the event of a U.S. decision to attack Iran. His statement stresses that Iran was not on the agenda of the recent talks in Washington by Polish foreign affairs and defence ministers." WMR's Polish intelligence sources were the same who revealed the presence of secret CIA prison camps in Poland. The Polish government has kept secret a report on those bases after initially denying the bases existed.

No assurances of support to U.S. in event of Iran attack

The spokesman for the Polish Foreign Affairs Ministry has dismissed claims that Poland has pledged its support in the event of a U.S. decision to attack Iran. His statement stresses that Iran was not on the agenda of the recent talks in Washington by Polish foreign affairs and defence ministers.
The statement follows allegations by Wayne Madsen, a former U.S. Navy intelligence officer-turned-investigative journalist that both ministers gave assurances of Polish support to U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Wayne Madsen, an investigative journalist based in Washington, is the author of Genocide and Covert Operations in Africa 1993-1999.
